ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm John

"The Bean" in Chicago

WHERE I COME FROM

I have lived in Mendota Heights for 14 years, but my roots in our community go back much further.  My uncle, Dr. William (Bill) Mazzitello, lived in Mendota Heights during the 1970's and 1980's. I remember fondly coming to Mendota Heights in my childhood for family events.

I grew up in Saint Paul, Maplewood, and Roseville.  After graduating from Cretin-Derham Hall high school, I attended Marquette University on an Air Force ROTC Scholarship, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Degree. I was commissioned as an officer in the US Air Force upon graduation. I served six years in the active duty Air Force with duty assignments in Italy, England, and Alaska.  I left active duty while in Alaska and went to work for the State of Alaska in both the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Transportation & Public Facilities.  I continued my military service, part-time, in the Air Force Reserve and the Alaska Air National Guard.

Upon returning to Minnesota in 2004, I worked for a civil engineering consulting firm specializing in land development before joining the City of Mendota Heights as your Public Works Director/City Engineer in 2008.  I continued to serve in the military part-time, transferring to the Minnesota Air National Guard's 148th Fighter Wing in Duluth, where I served until I retired from military service in 2014.  I retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel as the Commander of the 148th Civil Engineer Squadron.  I left city employment in 2016 to go back to the private sector, serving as the Director of Municipal Services for two different consulting firms until I was hired as the Deputy Director of Public Works for Ramsey County.

I am the proud father of a Cretin-Derham Hall high school senior, and although an official date has not been set yet, I am engaged to marry Katherine Virnig sometime in late 2023.
